The faces you see below portray the human cost of the British Forces' campaign in Afghanistan since it began in October 2001.

Among those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country is Newquay-born 40-year-old Flight Lieutenant Gareth Nicholas, who died in a plane crash on 2 September, 2006, during a major offensive against the Taliban. Bridgwater-born Sergeant Benjamin James Knight, 25, died in the same incident. Corporal Damian Mulvihill, 32, from Plymouth, was killed by an explosion while on patrol on 20 February, 2008. Trooper Jack Sadler, 21, was killed on 4 December, 2007, when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. He was a volunteer soldier from Exeter. Taunton man Royal Marine David Marsh, died on 30 March, 2008, aged 23, while patrolling in a vehicle hit by an explosion.
