Jazz pianist takes it all in her Stride

RENOWNED US jazz pianist Judy Carmichael makes a rare Westcountry appearance next week with a lunchtime concert at Plymouth City Museum and Gallery of Art as part of the 17th International Concert Series, organised by Jeanie Moore.

Not many contemporary jazz pianists can boast a nickname given to them by the great Count Basie, but Judy so impressed the maestro with her awesome two-fisted technique that he dubbed her "Stride" in reference to her mastery of the pre-Second World War solo playing style popularised by Fats Waller. In the technically and physically demanding stride style, the left hand makes huge octave leaps – strides – to provide percussive accompaniment for the right, dispensing with the need for a conventional rhythm section.

A native of California, Judy moved to New York in the early 80s and has established and maintained a busy worldwide concert schedule ever since. She has toured for the United States Information Agency throughout India, Portugal, Brazil and Singapore.

Grammy-nominated Judy, named a Steinway Artist by the prestigious piano make, was the first jazz musician to tour China with US Government sponsorship. As host of the Jazz Inspired radio show, she also has a reputation as an engaging raconteur.
