Kasia Andrews has been nominated for the Holburne Portrait Prize for her work, 'Reflection'.
The Plymouth College of Art and Design student is among 26 artists finalists in the South West competition, run by Bath's nationally important Holburne Gallery.
The winner will receive a commission of £5,000 to portray a leading figure from the cultural life of the region. The portrait will be added to the gallery's collection, which includes work from the 18th century to the present day. Past winners of the prize have painted Glastonbury Festival organiser Michael Eavis and the directors of Aardman Animations, Peter Lord, David Sproxton and Nick Park, creators of Wallace and Gromit. Kasia, who is studying for a fine art degree, said: "I am absolutely ecstatic that I have made it to the finals of the Holburne Portrait prize, I am still surprised that I have made it this far. It means so much to me to know that my work is worthy of such a highly respected exhibition."
The winner will be announced on October 17 by the prize panel of judges comprising author Victoria Glendinning, John Leighton, director of the National Galleries of Scotland, and artist and portrait painter Humphrey Ocean RA, whose portraits of Sir Paul McCartney, Philip Larkin and Tony Benn hang in the National Portrait Gallery.
Although the judges will choose the winner, there is also a 'people's prize', awarded to the artist who receives the most public votes. To see all the entries and to vote, go to www.promotions.thisisbath.co.uk /peoples-choice-awards
