Bomber 'not sorry' over terror attack

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 10:00

MUSLIM convert Nicky Reilly, who tried to kill diners by blowing up a family restaurant in Exeter, left a chilling suicide note revealing his hatred for what he called Britain's "war on Islam", the Old Bailey has been told.

His note, found by police in his bedroom at his mother's flat in King Street, Plymouth, blamed the "disgusting" behaviour of Britons, and the suffering of Muslims at the hands of Britain, Israel and America, for the attack on the Giraffe restaurant.

The note, printed in red ink, attacks drunkenness and sexual immorality as well as the treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.

In it Reilly, 22, insists: "I have not been brainwashed or indoctrinated."

The note begins: "In the name of God most gracious, most merciful: why I did it.

"Everywhere Muslims are suffering at the hands of Britain, Israel and America. We are sick of taking all the brutality from you. You have imprisoned over 1,000 Muslims in Britain alone in your war on Islam. You torture and destroy Muslim lives by taking a father or a son or a brother, even you torture Muslim women."

Despite writing the note, making explosives, making contact with terrorist sites on the Internet and targeting the Exeter restaurant, his barrister Kerim Fuad argued Reilly "lacked cunning" and is the least sophisticated person to be charged with terrorism.

The failed bomber's suicide note was revealed as Mr Fuad argued Reilly should be made the subject of an interim hospital order, which could have delayed his sentencing for at least 11 months.

But the application was rejected by Mr Justice Calvert-Smith who said: "A year's wait until this young man is sentenced is simply out of the question."

He put off sentencing to January 30 to allow reports from two psychiatrists.

Reilly, who changed his name to Mohammad Rashid Saeed-Alim in 2004 in tribute to the 9/11 New York suicide attackers, pleaded guilty last month to attempted murder and preparing an act of terrorism.

The court was given details of how dozens of customers at the Giraffe restaurant in Exeter fled in panic when three soft drink bottles exploded in the toilets on May 22 this year.

The Old Bailey heard yesterday how Reilly's note went on to say: "In Britain, it's OK for a girl to have sex without marriage and if she gets pregnant she can get an abortion so easily.

"When you are getting drunk on Friday and Saturday night your behaviour is worse than animals. You have sex in nightclub toilets. You urinate in shop doorways. You shout your foul and disgusting mouth off in the street.

"It is unacceptable to Allah and the true religion Islam. Britain and USA and Israel have no real rules.

"I have not been brainwashed or indoctrinated. I am not insane. I am not doing it to escape a life of problems or hardships. I am doing what God wants from his mujahideen. We love death as you love life. You kill one of my people, I kill one of yours."

Mr Fuad told the court doctors had expressed concerns about the mental state of Reilly who has Asperger's Syndrome and learning difficulties.

Mr Fuad said: "This defendant is not sophisticated in the slightest in any aspect of his life. He may well be the least cunning person ever to have come before this court for any offence of this magnitude, for terrorism.

"I do not want to diminish the sheer horror of this defendant's actions.

"Innocent people could have been injured, maimed or killed. It may be a mixture of sheer good fortune and the defendant's incompetence that the damage was restricted."

Mr Fuad said Reilly had been influenced by others on the Internet, where he trawled through jihad websites to find out how to make nail bombs.

The judge said anything other than a long term of incarceration in a secure institution was not possible.
