Birthday boy hopes to continue scoring form
Saturday, October 11, 2008, 10:00
Robertson struck his first goal of the season in last Saturday's superb 3-0 home win over Stevenage Borough and followed up by swooping to score from Kevin Nicholson's corner in Thursday night's 1-1 draw with Oxford United.
Even more special for the 6ft 3in centre back was that some relatives, visiting from Australia, were there at Plainmoor on Thursday to see him in top form.
The tall centre back has always had an eye for goal from set plays. He marked his Plainmoor debut two seasons ago – while on loan from former club Sheffield United – with a cracking volley from a free kick in a convincing 3-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers.
Now the young Scot goes into tomorrow's clash at Nene Park looking to continue the Gulls' roll and on a high after collecting Setanta Sports' man of the match award following Thursday's draw – and his two goals in two games "haul".
Robertson – universally recognised as Robbo – said: "It's been a great week so far for me personally, especially with family over from Australia.
"I do enjoy scoring, I think everybody does, but it would have been even better if it had been the winner.
"Getting the recognition is nice but I would have swapped it (the man of the match award) for the team winning and not conceding.
"As a defender you are never happy to concede – especially from a corner.
"Now we have to go up and do the job at Rushden. They are the home side and the pressure is on them so that will make it interesting."
United boss Paul Buckle is hoping to recall forward Elliot Benyon to the squad.
Benyon failed a late fitness test just before Thursday's draw but the bright 21-year-old clinical finisher – who limped out of the 1-1 draw at Wrexham with a hamstring injury – is expected to be fit for action.
After getting back to running last week there was a slight hope that Benyon may have figured on Thursday, but Buckle did not want to risk further injury to his young ace, especially with a doubt over the fitness of pacy forward Roscoe Dsane.
Dsane, 27, missed Thursday's match with a thigh injury after featuring in the 3-0 home win over Stevenage.
Once again Buckle was forced to change his winning line-up.
Buckle admitted: "I could have done with Elliot especially with Roscoe out. Elliot should be fine now though. I didn't want to take any risks with him, it's not worth it.
"I have told the players, the onus will be on Rushden. They will have to come and do the chasing and the harrying – and it will be our turn to sit in and counter attack them. The boot will be on the other foot.
"The onus on us against Oxford was to go forward whereas now it will be with Rushden.
"Sometimes as the home team it is not quite as easy as it looks when the onus is on you. It really isn't.
"I know from my time as a player it isn't always that easy. And we are looking forward to it. We want to stay unbeaten.
"The players are on a tremendous run at the moment and we must not be too downhearted when we have just drawn with Oxford.
"They are a good side and they are in-form – the main thing is that we have got another point on the board. We have not lost."
Diamonds attack is set to be led by familiar foe, Cornish born former Torquay, Exeter and Plymouth striker Lee Phillips – who transferred from United to Rushden in summer.
The home side is also set to include on-loan Exeter midfielder Manny Panther.
Rushden won the corresponding fixture 2-1 last season after trailing 1-0 and have not lost in four home meetings with the Gulls... so far.
